Cornyn Faces His Toughest Election Yet
Republican Sen. John Cornyn, who is seeking a fifth term, is also in for a fight. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has mounted a primary challenge, positioning himself as an anti-establishment conservative after surviving impeachment in 2023.
Paxton was acquitted of charges including bribery and abuse of public trust during a historic trial in the Republican-led Senate. He has since leaned heavily on his outsider image to connect with the GOP base.
Democrats’ Uphill Climb in Texas
No Democrat has won statewide office in Texas since 1994. While O’Rourke’s near-upset of Cruz in 2018 gave the party momentum, Republican margins have only grown since. Former President Donald Trump carried Texas by more than 13 points in 2024, underscoring the steep climb ahead for Democrats like Talarico.
Still, his entry into the race signals a push from a younger generation of Democrats determined to reshape Texas politics.
