Increasing Awareness of The Functions of Local Governments
As we The People approach the upcoming City Council elections, appraised property values and the accompanying protests, it has become very necessary that more attention be paid to the dissemination of accurate information regarding the structure and function of our local government.
Within the local community, one group comes to mind: The Power of One, which has been focused on increasing voter turnout, as well as increasing the public’s awareness regarding propositions and amendments, whenever possible and when they appear on the ballot.
Most recently, the group held a discussion on City Government, designed to make citizens more aware of the structure of the Mayor – Council, role of the City Manager and identifying eligibility criteria for those seeking elected office.
The next forum, scheduled for Saturday March 25th, from 12:00 to 2:00 pm, will be at the Carver Branch Library. The focus will be on County Government, the roles of the County Judge, County Commissioners and seeking to ascertain how well the community knows this part of local government and how it functions, what eligibility criteria must be met by candidates for these offices and more.
As we approach May, there are elections coming up, for Mayor and City Council districts, which we will certainly be covering, in order that every area gets more accurate information on who will be competing for these positions.
Further along in May, additional focus will be placed on the function of the Bexar Appraisal District, how property is appraised, and how homeowners may file protests, if they disagree with the appraised value of their property.
We look forward to keeping our readers well informed on the foregoing issues.
