Grieving Parents Sue Florida Hospital After Newborn’s Tragic Death
The parents of a baby girl, Jahxy Peets, have filed a lawsuit against Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital, alleging that a hospital worker broke their daughter’s neck, leading to her death. Jahxy’s parents, Gianna Lopera and Jahmair Peets, say the hospital failed to identify the person responsible and tried to cover up the incident.
Premature Birth and Suspicious Injuries
Jahxy Peets was born at just 24 weeks on June 12, 2022, and was placed in intensive care due to her premature birth. Two weeks later, healthcare providers noticed the newborn’s limbs had stopped moving, prompting a neurological consult. Jahmair Peets said a bruise was found on Jahxy’s spine, and she passed away from her injuries 165 days later, on November 25, 2022.
Hospital Liability and Alleged Cover-Up
The lawsuit claims the hospital failed to document or investigate the fatal injury, with an MRI revealing Jahxy’s neck had been snapped by “extreme excessive force.” Doctors reviewing the case stated, “there’s no way for this to happen accidentally,” citing evidence of spinal cord abnormalities and hemorrhage.
The hospital admitted responsibility for Jahxy’s death under Florida Statute 766.207, which limits financial damages through arbitration. However, the parents rejected this admission to seek justice beyond monetary compensation. “We would never ever be able to find out what happened to Jahxy,” attorney Nicole Kruegel said.
Desperate for Accountability and Justice
The heartbroken parents are demanding answers, worried that the person responsible could still be working in the NICU. “As far as we know, they’re still handling babies,” Kruegel said.
Seeking Damages and Support
Jahxy’s parents are requesting a jury trial and over $50,000 in damages. A news conference will be held on October 21 outside the hospital to demand accountability.
Additionally, a GoFundMe page was created to help cover Jahxy’s medical care before her passing and ongoing family expenses.
