90’s Sitcom the “Fresh Prince of Bel Air” Premiered 35 Years Ago

On September 10th, 1990, the half hour comedy starring rapper Will Smith, at the time also known as the Fresh Prince, premiered on NBC. The premise of the show centers around Smith as a fictionalized version of himself leaving his hometown of West Philadelphia being sent to live with his wealthy aunt, uncle, and cousins in Bel Air, California. A family sitcom created in the same vein as The Cosby Show, the show helped propel the model established by the former for a whole new generation.

From Sitcom Star to Global Fame

The series ran from September 10th, 1990 to May 20th, 1996 and transformed Smith into a household name. Writer Sunny Morgan, in their 2024 article for Revolt TV, “The Cast of ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’: Where Are They Now?” writes,

“Will Smith skyrocketed to acting fame after his lead role in the NBC sitcom that was based around his rap persona…the series follows protagonist Will’s adjustment to his new life amongst the elite. His role on “Fresh Prince” took him from Grammy-winning rapper to worldwide success as an actor.”

Beloved Characters and Bold Storylines

The show became known for not only Smith’s hi-jinks but the nuanced narrative arc of Will’s relationship with the Bankses: the ongoing rivalry between Will and his cousin Carlton (portrayed by actor Alfonso Ribeiro, the sweet interactions with his cousin Ashley (portrayed by actress Tatiana Ali),and his generational clashes and life lessons with his Uncle Phil (portrayed by the late actor James Avery). The show dealt with topics that were relevant at the time such as racial profiling, substance abuse, Black history, and gun violence.The show also became known for its guest stars, such as Smith’s best friend in real life and on the show, Jeffrey Townes, also known as DJ Jazzy Jeff, fellow hip hop artist Queen Latifah, and more.

The Show’s Enduring Influence

In a 2020 interview with Icon vs. Icon, Jeff stated, “it’s humbling to see how The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and our music has transcended time and continued to shape popular culture.”

After the show ended in 1996, Will Smith became one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood. During the show, he made his film debut in the 1993 film Six Degrees Of Separation and later found breakthrough success with films Bad Boys (1995), Independence Day (1996), and Men In Black (1997). His success continued into the 2000’s, garnering various accolades and maintaining pop culture status. The Fresh Prince of Bel Air continues to air on cable and streaming platforms. It has also continued relevance through various memes.
