Celebrate Black History Month During February at One of the Many Free Events

San Antonio is honoring Black History Month with a lineup of free events that celebrate the rich history, culture, and contributions of Black communities. From educational panels and live performances to art exhibits and community gatherings, these events offer a chance to reflect, learn, and connect. Whether you’re looking to explore local Black-owned businesses, enjoy soulful music, or engage in meaningful discussions, there’s something for everyone to take part in this month.

BLACK HISTORY FILM SERIES: “MILES OF SMILES”

When: February 7, 2025
Where: Carver Community Cultural Center

Catch February’s installment of the San Antonio African American Community Archive & Museum (SAAACAM) Black History Film Series featuring “Miles of Smiles.” This film explores the unique and complex position of Pullman porters within the luxurious sleeping-car train system. While regarded with high status in the Black community, these workers occupied the lowest rank aboard the train. Be sure to stay after the show for a panel discussion.

BLACK COWBOYS: AN AMERICAN STORY

When: On view through February 9, 2025
Where: Witte Museum

Visit the Witte Museum to explore an inspiring exhibit featuring artifacts, photos, and documents that celebrate the legacy of Black cowboys. Uncover stories of their incredible skill, resilience, and the strength they showed in overcoming adversity.

SAPL MOVIE TIME

When: Sunday, February 9, 2025 2pm to 4pm.

Where: Collins Garden Library

The San Antonio Public Library will host a free movie screening for “Marley” from 2-4 p.m. on Feb. 9 at the Collins Garden Library.

BHM Making Black America: Episodes 1-2

When: Feb. 13, 2025

Join us as for a viewing of the PBS Special, Making Black America: Episodes 1-2

JOHN COLEMAN & ANTHONY EDWARDS EXHIBIT AT THE CARVER GALLERY

Where: Carver Community Cultural Center

Explore John Coleman’s vivid acrylic portraits, capturing moments in African American life, and Anthony C. Edwards’ self-taught works, inspired by a profound appreciation for African American art. These exhibitions offer a powerful connection to Black heritage and history.
