Feeling Safe in America

VOTE

Early voting started this October and already there has been record-breaking attendance. Voting is, and has always been, an important right to exercise in America.

Regardless of the candidate one endorses, the important thing to vote as for many communities, the right had not always been available. CNN Politics reports, “more than 28 million Americans have already voted for president, as an election system tweaked for the pandemic meets an electorate that doesn’t want to wait for November 3 to be heard.”

Since the 2016 election, voting has become a trending topic. With many news outlets reporting the percentage of how many chose not to vote for the two primary candidates, the eventual outcome stood the test of time as one of the most shocking and controversial elections in history.

The Center for American Progress reported, “In the immediate aftermath of the election, and over the ensuing months, electoral analysts have tried to assess two main components of how the 2016 election unfolded: the breakdown of the vote itself and the motivations for these vote choices.” Due to the unprecedented controversy surrounding the candidates, it is fair to say voter opinion influenced the results of what would become our then 45th president.

Four years later, another election has emerged, in the aftermath of a global pandemic, a civil rights uproar, and a myriad of climate concerns. Voter registration organizations have poured several dollars into captivating voting campaigns that seemed to have missed the mark during the previous election.  The Presidential and Vice Presidential debates have brought in record viewership and for many, patriotic behavior was among the many that has been absent during these heated discussions over America’s future.

There has not been a single group of individuals that has not been impacted by the significance of the outcomes this election can bring. Many would argue no other election or presidency has ever threatened to dismantle the rights of so many such as this one. Many have argued what it truly boils down to: feeling safe in America as an American citizen, feeling confident and optimistic about the American future as an American citizen, and, most of all, feeling placed on an equal playing field as an American citizen.
