This Black History Month, Melaneyes Media invites you to embark on a special journey through San Antonio’s rich African American heritage. On Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 2 PM, join the San Antonio Black History Bus Tour, a guided experience that highlights the history, resilience, and contributions of Black communities in the city—specifically, the historic Denver Heights neighborhood.
Departing from the Carver Library (3350 E. Commerce St.), this tour will take attendees to some of the most significant African American landmarks in San Antonio. From The Good Samaritan Hospital and Douglass School to Pittman Sullivan Park and Mt. Zion First Baptist Church, each stop offers a deeper understanding of the city’s Black history and its cultural evolution.
Denver Heights, one of San Antonio’s oldest African American neighborhoods, was once a thriving hub of Black-owned businesses, churches, and an influential arts and music scene. As the city continues to grow and gentrify, this tour serves as an opportunity to honor and preserve these important spaces.
The tour is inspired by the documentary Walk on the River: A Black History of the Alamo City and was created in response to community interest in learning more about local Black history. Attendees will travel in comfort aboard a modern, 56-passenger charter bus equipped with climate control, reclining seats, onboard restrooms, and electrical outlets.
