From 27 to 2: Mayoral Race Narrows, Council Races Split: Some Decided, Others Move to Run-off

San Antonio voters cast their ballots on Saturday, May 3, 2025, in a pivotal municipal election that will shape the city’s leadership for the next four years. With no mayoral candidate securing a majority, and several City Council seats still undecided, runoff elections are set for Saturday, June 7, 2025.

Mayoral Race: Ortiz Jones and Pablos Advance to Runoff

In a crowded field of 27 candidates, former U.S. Air Force Under Secretary Gina Ortiz Jones led the mayoral race with 27.20% of the vote (27,483 votes), followed by former Texas Secretary of State Rolando Pablos with 16.61% (16,785 votes) . As no candidate achieved the required 50% majority, Ortiz Jones and Pablos will face off in a runoff election on June 7.

Multiple Runoffs Sparks Debates Amongst San Antonio Voters

As the San Antonio mayoral race boils over into a runoff, voters are sounding off online after the raising concerns about influence, transparency, and integrity– a discourse that has grown tense and personal especially once the votes were counted.

With Ortiz Jones and Pablos moving to a runoff, the public conversation is growing louder—and sharper—by the day.

On City Council, five incumbents held onto their seats, one new councilmember was elected outright, and four districts are also headed to runoff elections.

City Council Results

Incumbents Re-elected Without Runoff

Several City Council incumbents secured re-election by obtaining more than 50% of the vote:

District 2: Jalen McKee-Rodriguez – 61.37%
District 3: Phyllis Viagran – 57.34%
District 5: Teri Castillo – 76.81%
District 7: Marina Alderete Gavito – 71.57%
District 10: Marc Whyte –

New Councilmember Elected

District 4: Edward Mungia won outright with 56.78% of the vote, avoiding a runoff in this open seat race .

Runoff Elections Required

Four City Council districts will proceed to runoff elections due to no candidate achieving a majority:

District 1:

• Sukh Kaur (incumbent) – 48.91%
• Patty Gibbons – 17.80%

District 6:

• Kelly Ann Gonzalez – 19.70%
• Ric Galvan – 19.37%

District 8:

• Ivalis Meza Gonzalez – 40.33%
• Paula McGee – 22.22%

District 9:

• Misty Spears – 38.01%
• Angela “Angi” Taylor Aramburu – 35.57%

Early Vote Period: 

May 27-May 30th & June 2-June 3, 2025

May 27-May 30- (8:00 AM to 6:00 PM)

June 2 & June 3- (7:00 AM to 7:00 PM)

Election Day Vote Period

Saturday, June 7, 2025 (7 AM to 7 PM)

*Early Voting poll sites will not be open on the weekend for this runoff election.

All registered voters in San Antonio are eligible to participate in the runoff elections, regardless of whether they voted in the initial May 3 election.
