Education and the Texas Legislative Session

Now that school is over, and we’re going into our summer break let’s go over the issue that HB 1468 didn’t make it to the Governor’s desk for him to sign into law. This bill would have allowed all Texas school districts to create their policies to allow up to 10% of students to continue with online learning at home. So next school, all students will have to return to their classrooms for in-person learning. This will put our families that suffer from chronic  illnesses in a horrible predicament next year. The HB1468 wasn’t passed through because our House Representatives walked out to protest over a voting bill that our state wanted to pass. So now our school districts’ hands are tied because this is in the hands of state leaders. This is a fight that we can not win on a local level; we must call our state legislator’s offices. The bigger question is what will happen to our children, teachers, and staff at our schools, as we’re still not sure if this pandemic is over. As parents, we have worried about our child’s education as they were learning online and in-person, and now we will be overwhelmed with more stress. Then the other law that went into effect was that masks aren’t required in schools; instead, it’s, as  now an option. So this upcoming school year is one that may be difficult for all of us. The other option for parents is to can find an online school program that provides a quality education. When looking for an online school make sure the teachers are certified to teach online also go over the curriculum they offer for kids in Pk-12th grade. Parents, please keep in mind that some of these programs charge a fee and some are free but remember to investigate all of it before enrolling your child. Lastly, I know that we all scared but we can overcome this by helping each other.
