Drugs and Guns Drive Sheriff’s Office to Increase Patrol at Local High Schools

Bexar County Sheriff Increases Patrols at 2 San Antonio High Schools Due to Drugs and Guns

Bexar County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) announced by public notice that they will be patrolling along with a new task force at 2 San Antonio High Schools.  This began on Monday the 20th.

The 2 high school’s are Brennan and Southwest where the BCSO stated, “in direct response to gun and drug related incidents, and/or involving students of the schools.”

The BCSO announcements explained how realigning assets to be in a position to develop the School Safety Task Force for the rest of the 2023 school year would focus on the Northside ISD and Southwest ISD to aid their district police. The BCSO will also be working with units who are supporting this effort to include Gang Unit and Organized Crime, Mental Health/SMART, SCORE (Community Policing), Patrol and Traffic. Hopefully all these resources the BCSO is supported by will garner positive results.

Sheriff Javier Salazar said in a statement, “Both districts are great partners to us and both do an excellent job of protecting their sizable student populations. We recognized that both districts share common issues which we believe all three agencies can work together to address. Our level of involvement on the actual campuses will be determined by the school districts themselves. I’m meeting with superintendents and police chiefs with SWISD and NISD this week to determine their needs. For now, our approach will be a more pronounced presence near the schools to reassure parents that we are working with the ISDs to keep their students safe.”

A safety forum is scheduled for March 23rd for Northside ISD. The forum will be held at Bennie L. Cole Elementary starting at 6pm to 8pm. The Southwest ISD forum will be announced in the next few days.
