Iconic Musical Returns After Four Decades
More than 40 years after its groundbreaking debut, the Tony Award–winning musical Dreamgirls is making its way back to Broadway. Producers Sonia Friedman, Sue Wagner, John Johnson, and LaChanze confirmed Monday that the revival will premiere in fall 2026.
The announcement was teased with the caption, “All you’ve got to do is dream… Dreamgirls is returning to Broadway,” on the show’s newly launched Instagram account.
From Original Broadway to Hollywood Success
Dreamgirls first hit the Broadway stage in 1981, telling the story of a fictional Black girl group navigating the entertainment industry in the 1960s. Loosely inspired by acts like The Supremes, the original cast featured Jennifer Holliday, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Loretta Devine, and Obba Babatundé. Holliday’s powerhouse performance as Effie White made her a Broadway star and earned her a Tony Award.
The story later reached new generations with the 2006 film adaptation starring Beyoncé, Eddie Murphy, Anika Noni Rose, Jamie Foxx, and Jennifer Hudson. Hudson’s portrayal of Effie earned her an Academy Award.
Camille A. Brown to Direct and Choreograph
The revival will be choreographed and directed by Camille A. Brown, marking her first time leading a Broadway musical. Brown, a five-time Tony nominee, is known for acclaimed work on productions including For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When The Rainbow Is Enuf, Once on This Island, Hell’s Kitchen, and Gypsy.
Run dates and a Broadway theater for the revival are still to be announced.
Global Auditions Underway
Producers are launching international casting calls in search of “talented women of all shapes and sizes.” Auditions will be held in major cities including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Detroit, Miami, London, Toronto, Mexico City, Amsterdam, Rome, and Paris.
