According to Social Media Posts from his Wife, Sherkita Long-Platt, DJ Unk Recently Passed Away

DJ Unk, the Atlanta rapper and producer behind iconic hits “Walk It Out” and “2 Step,” has passed away. Known off-stage as Anthony Platt, DJ Unk left an indelible mark on hip-hop and pop culture, crafting songs that became staples of early 2000s music and continue to resonate today.

The Legacy of “Walk It Out” and “2 Step”

DJ Unk rose to fame in 2006 with his smash singles “Walk It Out” and “2 Step,” which dominated Billboard’s rap charts and cemented his place in music history. “Walk It Out” not only climbed into the top 10 of Billboard’s pop charts but also gained renewed momentum with a remix featuring André 3000 and Jim Jones, becoming a nationwide radio hit. These tracks defined an era, bridging the gap between rap and mainstream pop while helping solidify Atlanta’s dominance in the hip-hop scene.

Nearly 20 years later, “Walk It Out” and “2 Step” remain party staples, with their catchy hooks and iconic dance moves still bringing people of all ages—including grandmothers—to the dance floor.

Tributes from the Hip-Hop Community

Big Oomp Records, the label that signed DJ Unk in 2000, paid tribute to the artist in an Instagram post:
“It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that we announce the passing of a true ATL legend, Anthony Platt, better known as DJ Unk. His hit songs, such as ‘Walk It Out’ and ‘2 Step,’ have left an indelible mark on the industry, and his legacy will continue to inspire artists, DJs, and fans alike for years to come.”

Health Challenges and Faith

In 2009, DJ Unk suffered a heart attack, which prompted him to reevaluate his lifestyle. In a 2010 interview with XXL, he admitted that poor diet, lack of exercise, and stress had taken a toll on his health. Determined to turn his life around, he prioritized his well-being, cutting back on drinking and smoking while deepening his faith. “Instead of praying once like before, I go twice a day. It’s a blessing to be here,” he said at the time.

Remembering a Legend

DJ Unk’s contributions to music were pivotal during the early 2000s, and his songs continue to resonate as timeless hits. From house parties to dance floors worldwide, his music remains a celebration of life and culture. Rest in peace, DJ Unk—a legend whose legacy will live on for generations.
