Born and Raised in Denver Heights, Meet Baptist Health System’s Humanitarian Awardee Dr. Leo Edwards
In various times, in San Antonio’s historically rich Black community, one can often find a dedicated professional, from a variety of professional occupations.
Recently, one such individual Dr. Leo Edwards, a well known member of the medical profession, was recognized by the Baptist Health System and received their Humanitarian Award for his forty years of service to his patients, all in an area not far from where he was born and raised – Denver Heights.
In our recent conversation, Dr. Edwards attributed a large part of his success, to his parents, which he described as being rather “balanced”, as his Mother was “a community activist, with certain standards”, who recognized problems with students and set out to make people better.
His father was described as an introvert, but, rather focused on youth sports, having been a CYO coach, as well as a former military man, who “always took time to review our homework”, which left a huge impression on him.
Dr. Edwards also related that he felt he was “destined to be a preacher” and a sharer of information.
Ultimately, he recalled his father’s journey, picking up books and becoming interested in microbiology and tuberculosis.
In continuing his advanced education, he revealed he “encountered adversities”, having come upon a derogatory caricature, on an elevator wall”, which he took and “taped it to my manual on infectious diseases”, as motivation, and he still has it today.
More influence, in his medical journey, came from a younger sister – Michelle, who taught him “how to be a better Dr. Edwards!”
Dr. Edwards is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, having been initiated into Psi Alpha Chapter, in 1983. The foregoing chronicles his upholding the fraternity’s Four Cardinal Principles:
