Democrats Introduce Bill to Try to Protect Free Speech

Democrats Push Back Against Trump Policing Free Speech After Kimmel Suspension

Congressional Democrats blasted the Trump administration after ABC suspended comedian Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show following threats from the head of the Federal Communications Commission. Lawmakers unveiled a new bill aimed at strengthening free speech protections against government officials.

Bill Faces Uphill Battle in GOP-Led Congress

While the legislation highlights Democratic efforts to defend political speech, it is unlikely to advance in the Republican-controlled Congress. Still, party leaders used the moment to sharply criticize what they see as dangerous government overreach.

Kimmel Comments Sparked FCC Threats

Kimmel had said that “many in MAGA land are working very hard to capitalize on” the assassination of Charlie Kirk, accusing Trump supporters of reframing the accused gunman’s politics. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr responded by calling the remarks “truly sick” and threatened regulatory consequences for Disney, ABC’s parent company.

Disney is currently seeking FCC approval for ESPN’s acquisition of the NFL Network, raising the stakes of Carr’s warnings. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer responded by saying Carr should be fired.
