Anti-DEI Efforts Will Most Likely Only Ramp Up, Here is What it Looks Like Right Now

DEI Programs Weathered a Myriad Of Attacks with More to Come in 2025

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs faced significant setbacks in 2024, with numerous corporations and academic institutions rolling back their efforts. As 2025 approaches, challenges to DEI initiatives show no signs of slowing down.

DEI Under Attack in 2024

Prominent voices like Elon Musk and Lululemon founder Chip Wilson led public campaigns against DEI. Major companies, including Walmart, Lowe’s, Ford, and Toyota, scaled back their programs following pressure from social media influencers such as Robby Starbuck.

State legislatures also played a role in curtailing DEI efforts. Utah, Alabama, and Iowa joined Florida and Texas in banning DEI offices at public universities, while Idaho, Kansas, and Indiana prohibited diversity statements in hiring and admissions processes. These changes mark a stark departure from the commitments many organizations made following the 2020 murder of George Floyd. These companies did what they needed to do to ‘check the DEI’ box and got out of it as soon as they had their opportunity.

The Political Climate

With President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance pledging to dismantle federally funded DEI programs, the political landscape looks increasingly hostile. Trump’s administration has hinted at defunding and de-accrediting universities that fail to comply with these policies. Legal battles are expected to follow any such actions.

The Divide Over DEI

Critics of DEI argue that such initiatives promote division. Musk’s post on X referred to DEI as “racism by another name,” while Vance co-introduced the Dismantle DEI Act, claiming the ideology fosters hatred and racial division. Trump’s earlier executive order barring federal DEI programs was rescinded by President Biden but could return under the new administration.

On the other hand, DEI advocates counter that these initiatives address systemic barriers and ensure equitable opportunities. Nika White, a DEI consultant, emphasized that such programs raise standards and foster inclusivity. “Demonizing DEI fails to recognize the systemic barriers marginalized groups face,” she said.

Business Leaders Take a Stand – or Stay Silent

Despite the backlash, some corporate leaders remain committed to DEI. Jamie Dimon of JPMorgan Chase reaffirmed his support, calling DEI essential for business. Similarly, Mark Cuban, entrepreneur and former Dallas Mavericks owner, argued that diverse workforces drive better business outcomes. Yet, many companies have rebranded their efforts to avoid controversy, replacing “DEI” with terms like “inclusion and belonging.”

Public Opinion on DEI

Support for DEI persists among younger generations. A survey by College Rover found that 54% of students favor mandatory DEI courses, and 70% view DEI’s impact on campuses positively. Even 55% of Republican students surveyed acknowledged DEI’s benefits in fostering understanding across different ethnic groups.

The Economic Case for DEI

Research by Boston Consulting Group highlights that DEI programs boost profits and employee engagement. White noted that inclusive workplaces drive innovation and improve organizational performance, offering a compelling argument for businesses to maintain their commitments.

Looking Forward

While opponents like Robby Starbuck plan to intensify their campaigns against DEI in 2025, proponents remain determined to defend these initiatives. Fatimah Gilliam, author and DEI consultant, called for stronger advocacy from both individuals and organizations.

For many, the name of the initiative matters less than the results it delivers. Proponents argue that whether called “DEI” or “inclusion and belonging,” these programs are essential for creating equitable opportunities and fostering understanding in an increasingly diverse society.
