SCOTUS Rejects Cruz’s Challenge to Mifepristone
Texas Democratic Party — Today the Supreme Court ruled that Ted Cruz’s legal challenge to mifepristone, which is safely used in more than half of all abortions in the United States, can no longer go forward.
- Cruz signed on to an amicus brief earlier this year asking the Supreme Court to limit access to mifepristone, that falsely claimed the FDA “endangered patient health and safety.”
- In 2020, Cruz organized a letter to FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn demanding that the agency ban access to mifepristone.
- The letter baselessly calls mifepristone a “deadly pill” that “should never have been approved,” though the pill was “first approved nearly 25 years ago and shown in multiple studies to be overwhelmingly safe.”
Texas Democratic Party Executive Director Monique Alcala:
“Today, the Supreme Court affirmed that Ted Cruz’s attack on safe and effective medication abortion was without merit and political theatrics as usual. Our state is already grappling with the consequences of his extreme abortion ban and it is time he starts upholding the will of the people of Texas instead of pandering to his right-wing agenda. We will keep fighting back against Cruz’s attacks on reproductive freedom.”
