CRIME RISES, HUMANITY DROPS

As Crime Rises in Bexar County, Humanity Takes a Dive

Reporting deaths and accidents seems to be taking up the daily news we receive. A cross country feeling that reaches from west coast to the east coast, people do not feel safe conducting daily simple business. Going to the grocery store, sending your kids to school, driving, or just simply getting the next ‘spam likely’ call has awakened our nerves to duties that used to be enjoyable, certainly not nerve wracking as many feel now.

Recent events remind us of mass shootings or celebrating your friends birthday at a drag show to only be surrounded by the far right – ‘proud boys’ toting their guns. Either way your mind may flash a bad scene in front of you with the risk involved due to the last tragedy that happened. According to what you’re doing that day, that coincides with recent tragedy, we are wired humans with warning signs of risk factors. We wonder why mental health is so bad. We cannot control our surroundings or the actions of others. There are risk factors and they play a part in our everyday lives now attributing to the rise in mental health issues.

A hit and run on the EastSide of San Antonio last Friday left 2 people dead. No aide rendered, the driver fled the scene and SAPD is still working the case. The crash happened on the 2700 block of Rigsby Avenue around midnight last Friday. A 20 year old woman and 17 year old boy were crossing the street, within the crosswalk, when they were hit by the assailant who is still on the run.

The woman was pronounced dead upon SAPD’s arrival at the scene while the boy later died at the hospital. Unfortunately there are no witnesses to the crash.

Crime is not located in only the East Side of town, it is all over this city and world.  Driving down a highway anywhere in San Antonio poses a risk of a ‘road rager’ who is willing to shoot because you’re going too slow. Experiencing aggressive driving on the road is not uncommon—roughly eight in 10 drivers surveyed by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reported experiencing at least one incident in the month before the survey.

According to the FBI, Houston had the highest homicide rate out of the large Texas cities in 2021. Dallas came in second trailing Fort Worth. The lowest was Austin. With all Texas major cities, except Dallas, murders are higher from 2020-2021. 2021 has been the deadliest year in 30 years for both Houston and San Antonio.

During these holidays we can only hope we get a dose of humanity. To care for our neighbors, treat others like we’d want them to treat our mothers and children. I, myself, will be praying that the men and women in the world taking lives for senseless reasons begin to treat human life as if we’re their own.
