Community Outreach

2020 marks the San Antonio Observer’s 25th anniversary.  In addition to being the “voice of the Black community”, we are known for giving back.  Throughout history, the word “philanthropy” has been used almost exclusively to describe the generous giving of large sums of money—typically by millionaires and billionaires. Well, that was the old philanthropy. In recent years, the definition of philanthropy has begun to widen to include a larger swath of human generosity. Under this budding definition, “philanthropy” encompasses any-size contributions not just from the wealthy but organizations of all sizes.
The San Antonio Observer is dedicated to the African American community.  Our contributions include donations not just of money but of time and know-how.   In 2019 we have contributed more than $500,000 in in kind and cash donations.  During the coronavirus pandemic we put people over profits ensuring that the African American community is up to date with the latest safety tips and mitigation strategies.  During our 25-year history the Black community has looked to the Observer during crisis.  We continue to develop strategies to inform and give back to those who depend on us.
