Advocacy Groups to Address City Officials’ Ethics at City Hall Press Conference

Community Coalitions to Hold City Hall Press Conference Over City Officials’ Unethical Support for Spurs Arena

Community organizers are planning a Thursday morning press conference at City Hall to demand accountability from city officials they accuse of campaigning for the proposed Spurs arena tax using public resources.

The joint event, scheduled for 9 a.m. on Oct. 23, will feature speakers from Defending Public Money for Public Good PAC, COPS/Metro, and the No Project Marvel! coalition—all vocal opponents of what they describe as a “taxpayer giveaway” to billionaire Spurs owners.

“We’re calling out the misuse of taxpayer time and city resources for private gain,” said a statement from the coalition. “City staff should be fixing flooding problems, not selling voters a fourth arena that benefits out-of-town investors.”

They claim city staff have blurred the line between voter education and political campaigning by promoting the Win Together Campaign, which supports the arena project. The groups argue the city should remain neutral ahead of the November ballot measure and focus on infrastructure and affordability instead of subsidizing another sports complex.

“City-run events should inform voters, not serve as rallies for one side,” the PAC said. “That’s not democracy.”

Thursday’s event will mark the first public gathering since the ethics complaint was filed with the City Attorney’s Office, adding pressure on city leadership as early voting approaches.
