The City of San Antonio announced Friday that San Antonio Police Department Chief William McManus plans to retire by September 2026, concluding nearly 20 years leading the department and marking the longest tenure of a police chief in city history.

McManus has served as SAPD chief since April 17, 2006. City officials said he will remain in the role through September 2026 to provide continuity while future leadership plans are developed.

Statement From the Chief

In a statement released by the City, McManus said he remains committed to the department during his final year.

“Serving the City of San Antonio has been one of the greatest honors of my career,” McManus said. “I am proud of the men and women protecting our community, and I remain fully committed to this work through my final year and to supporting a smooth transition.”

City Manager Responds

City Manager Erik Walsh said McManus’ experience has provided stability for the department during periods of growth and change.

“Chief McManus’ leadership has helped guide the department through significant transitions,” Walsh said. “We appreciate his continued service as the City prepares for the next phase of leadership.”

Mayor Issues Brief Statement

Following the announcement, Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones acknowledged McManus’ retirement plans.

“The City of San Antonio is grateful for Chief McManus’ many years of service, and I appreciate his decades-long commitment to keeping San Antonio safe,” Mayor Jones said.
