Chris Rock Returns to Directing with Star-Studded A24 Film

Chris Rock has been in the spotlight for years. From his early days as a cast member of SNL, to unforgettable roles in movies like “Head of State” and “Madagascar,” to the infamous moment when he got slapped at the Oscars, Rock has always gravitated toward stardom. He’s mostly known for his comedy and acting roles, but he is also a well-established director, with three feature films and a documentary under his belt. Now he’s gearing up for another directorial venture in an upcoming A24 film that has a stacked cast so far.

New A24 Project Takes Shape

The currently untitled A24 film just recently kicked off production in Los Angeles, and most of the details surrounding it are still pretty vague. All we do know for now is that the film follows a gifted but forlorn actress named Misty Green (played by Rosalind Eleazar) whose career is floundering, when all of a sudden someone from her past mysteriously shows up and offers her something she thought she’d never get – a chance at a comeback.

A Cast Packed with Star Power

Chris Rock directs the film, based on a script he also wrote, and he’ll be starring in it too. Daniel Kaluuya (“Get Out” and “Judas and the Black Messiah”), Adam Driver (“BlacKkKlansman” and “Star Wars”), Anna Kendrick (“Pitch Perfect”), Topher Grace (“That 70s Show”) and Anthony Anderson (“Black-ish” and “Law & Order”) will also be appearing alongside Rock and Eleazar. A24 is a pretty highly coveted production studio these days, so their films typically attract many of the most successful actors; but even by A24 standards, the film has a first-class cast.

Rock Expands His Directing Resume

Chris Rock’s last directing gig was in the 2014 comedy “Top Five,” which he also starred in. With just a little over a decade hiatus, it seems he’s decided to take up the directing mantle again – in addition to the A24 project, he’ll also be directing an MLK biopic and an English-language remake of the Danish film “Another Round” that are both likely to release sometime next year. Recent years have seen somewhat of a transition from Rock, as he’s been branching out from comedy and pursuing more ‘serious,’ dramatic roles, like in “Spiral” and in season four of “Fargo,” earning praise for his performances in both. For the upcoming A24 film, he’ll be serving as director, actor, writer and producer, so it’ll be an opportunity to show off his dramatic prowess in full force.
