Mayoral Momentum: Gina Ortiz Jones Gains Powerful Support
On Monday, Gina Ortiz Jones, a former U.S. Air Force undersecretary and current candidate in the run off for San Antonio mayor, announced a series of high-profile endorsements ahead of the June 7 runoff election. Former mayors Julián Castro and Phil Hardberger publicly endorsed Jones, marking significant support in her campaign against opponent Rolando Pablos, a former Texas Secretary of State. Jones confirmed the endorsements via social media, with both Castro and Hardberger praising her vision and leadership capabilities.
In addition to these endorsements, Jones has garnered support from various local and national figures and organizations. Notably, she has been endorsed by U.S. Rep. Greg Casar, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar, City Council Members Jalen McKee-Rodriguez, Teri Castillo, Phyllis Viagran and Edward Mungia, and organizations such as EMILYs List, the Human Rights Campaign PAC, and the Asian American Action Fund.
Jones secured 27.2% of the vote in the May 3 general election, leading the field and advancing to the runoff against Pablos, who received 16.6%. The upcoming election will determine the successor to term-limited Mayor Ron Nirenberg.
With these endorsements, Jones aims to consolidate support across San Antonio’s diverse communities as she continues her campaign for mayor. Runoff Election Day is June 7.
