Carver Library Multi-Million Dollar Renovation Set to Start August 11th

Carver Branch Library Set to Close August 11th Beginning Nearly $13 Million Dollar Renovation

A pillar of San Antonio’s Eastside is getting a transformative upgrade. The Carver Branch Library is set to undergo a $12.8 million renovation and expansion that promises to reshape access to education, culture, and community resources—especially for the Eastside youth.

Slated to close for construction on Monday, August 11, the Carver Branch will undergo major renovations over the course of approximately 20 months, with a mid-2027 reopening anticipated. The project is part of the 2022–2027 San Antonio Bond Program, which voters approved to fund key infrastructure and community improvements citywide.

New Features: African American Resource Center and Tween Space

The Carver renovation, designed by Alta Architects, will include a new community meeting room, enhanced exterior design, expanded service areas, and the introduction of two landmark additions: an African American Resource Center and SAPL’s first-ever tween space—dedicated to youth ages 9–12. It will also include a $300,000 public art installation, reaffirming Carver’s longstanding role as a cultural anchor on the Eastside.

Community Voices Shape Final Library Design

“I am excited that we have achieved this important milestone in the transformative renovation of the historic Carver Branch Library,” said Library Director Sukrit Goswami.

Indeed, the community itself played a central role in shaping the library’s new design. In collaboration with City Council District 2 and the Public Works Department, the library engaged the public through two open forums, stakeholder sessions, surveys (online and paper), and direct feedback with library leadership. That input guided the final design, ensuring the updated Carver Branch will reflect the needs and vision of the people it serves.

Equitable Access & Lifelong Learning

For Eastside families, these renovations are more than just cosmetic. Spaces like Carver often fill a critical gap in access to educational resources, digital technology, mentorship, and safe community gathering spots.

As a cross-generational resource, it’s not just the younger generation who benefits. These public institutions serve older residents too, providing computer access and digital literacy resources.

Just down the street, St. Philip’s College within the few years completed millions in renovations as well. Major upgrades such as these continue the momentum of the Eastside’s educational and community revival. Together, these institutions reflect a powerful commitment to equity, access, and opportunity—all at no cost to the community, thanks to free public libraries and programs like AlamoPROMISE.

By mid-2027, Eastside residents will have a library that matches their ambition and reflects their roots.
