BRELAND Finds Inspiration in Selma for ‘Project 2024’
BRELAND, known for his genre-blending debut album Cross Country in 2022, took a step back from his whirlwind career to reflect on his next move. To recharge, he traveled to Selma, Alabama, where his family has roots, following in the footsteps of his mother. The trip inspired his latest release, the EP Project 2024.
Selma’s Influence on the Music
Expecting to find a thriving symbol of hope, BRELAND was struck by Selma’s struggle, with lingering tornado damage and vacant storefronts. This experience made him reflect on his connection to the community and motivated him to create music that shares real stories.
Human Connection Through Music
The EP’s most poignant track, “Same Work,” is a collaboration with The War & Treaty. Inspired by a veteran who told BRELAND they both do the “same work” by helping others, the song serves as the emotional core of the project, emphasizing shared purpose.
Not a Political Statement
Despite the provocative title, BRELAND clarifies that Project 2024 isn’t political. It reflects creative expression, not activism, though he acknowledges that his presence as a young, vocal Black artist in country music carries political weight.
Genre-Melding Sound
True to his style and much like other groundbreaking country artists like, Beyonce, Shaboozey, Tanner Adele, and others. BRELAND blends genres throughout the EP, with tracks like “Motion” incorporating Afrobeats and “Icing” drawing from Southern gospel. With Project 2024, BRELAND continues to push country music’s boundaries, focusing on storytelling and human connection.
