Bonham Academy Student Heads to NYC for NBA Math Hoops Global Championship

Camila Ramirez to Represent San Antonio in June 25-28 Competition

Exciting news for our community: Camila Ramirez, a bright fifth grader from Bonham Academy, has been selected to compete in the 2024 NBA Math Hoops Global Championship. This prestigious event will take place in New York City from June 25-28, coinciding with the NBA Draft week. The announcement was recently made by the San Antonio Spurs.

Camila’s family will accompany her on this incredible journey, providing them with the opportunity to explore the vibrant city of New York while she showcases her math talents on a global stage.

Dr. Kara Allen, the Chief People, Impact, and Belonging Officer for Spurs Sports & Entertainment, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “Proficiency in math is crucial for academic success and future career opportunities. Camila’s outstanding skills and dedication to the Spurs Math Hoops program make her a perfect representative, embodying our mission to foster a love of learning through sports.”

Camila earned her spot in the competition through her participation in the local Spurs Math Hoops program, sponsored by Whataburger. Throughout the year, she played over 25 NBA Math Hoops games, completed 10 curriculum units, and submitted a compelling video application.

The NBA Math Hoops program aims to engage students from grades 4-8, particularly those who have been underrepresented in STEM fields, including girls, students of color, and those from low-income backgrounds. The program utilizes a basketball-themed board game to teach fundamental math skills and social-emotional learning, using real-life NBA and WNBA player statistics.

This year’s Global Championship is co-hosted by Learn Fresh and NBA Cares. Learn Fresh, a nonprofit organization that runs the NBA Math Hoops program nationwide, led the selection process for the national representatives.

Nick Monzi, CEO and Co-Founder of Learn Fresh, expressed his pride, saying, “We are thrilled to have Camila represent the Spurs Math Hoops program at the Global Championship. The program has quickly become one of the most dynamic regional initiatives, thanks to the dedication of the Spurs, Whataburger, TX Ace, and our committed San Antonio educators.”

In addition to the competition, the participating students will attend the NBA Draft at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on June 26 as part of their all-expenses-paid trip.

Congratulations to Camila Ramirez for this remarkable achievement. She is not only making Bonham Academy proud but also representing our community on an international platform.
