San Antonio Marks the 100th Anniversary of Black History Month with Citywide Events Throughout February

As Black History Month marks its 100th anniversary, San Antonio is hosting a wide range of events throughout February that honor Black culture, history, creativity, and community. From sports and film to visual art, theater, food, and historic tours, these gatherings reflect the many ways Black history continues to shape the city’s past, present, and future.

The San Antonio Spurs’ Black Heritage Night

When: February 7, 2026
Where: Frost Bank Center

The San Antonio Spurs will celebrate Black Heritage Night as the Silver and Black take on the Dallas Mavericks. The event includes a pre-game party beginning at 3:00 p.m. and a commemorative Black Heritage Night baseball jersey or Coyote bobblehead. Pre-purchased tickets are required to receive the promotional items.

Maverick Pascal & Tyson Davis Exhibits at the Carver Gallery

When: Maverick Pascal: January 8 – February 13, 2026 | Tyson Davis: February 19 – March 27, 2026
Where: Carver Community Cultural Center

Two consecutive exhibitions at the Little Carver Gallery spotlight contemporary Black artists exploring identity, place, and transformation. Maverick Pascal’s Expansion of Home uses layered abstraction, metallic acrylics, and repeating forms to reflect on belonging, mental health, and evolving ideas of home. Tyson Davis follows with bold works rooted in large-scale mural practice, focusing on transforming space through art and community engagement.

Black History Film Series: MLK/FBI

When: February 6, 2026
Where: Carver Community Cultural Center

SAAACAM’s Black History Film Series presents MLK/FBI, a documentary directed by Sam Pollard that examines newly declassified FBI files revealing surveillance and targeting of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the Civil Rights Movement. A post-screening panel featuring local historians and community voices will reflect on Dr. King’s legacy and its continued relevance in San Antonio. The event is free, but registration is required.

Saaacam Green Book Civil Rights Bus Tour

When: February 14, 2026
Where: San Antonio African American Community Archive & Museum (SAAACAM)

This 2.5-hour guided bus tour explores more than 80 San Antonio sites once listed in the Negro Motorist Green Book. The tour highlights East Side neighborhoods and historic locations connected to Black entrepreneurship, resilience, and community, with stops spanning from downtown to SAAACAM’s exhibit space. The String Queens

The String Queens, a Washington, D.C.–based trio, bring a high-energy performance blending classical mastery with contemporary flair. Their genre-spanning program reimagines music from the Baroque era to today, featuring joyful arrangements of works by The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, and more.

Black History Art Market

Where: La Villita

Curated by SAAACAM, this family-friendly art market celebrates the 100th anniversary of Black History Month. Held at the historic La Villita Arts Village, the event highlights contemporary Black artists from Southwest Texas while honoring ancestors and cultural movements that shaped today’s creative landscape. Tre Floyds – Black Girl Therapy 2

Where: Jo Long Theatre

This powerful theatrical experience centers on six Black women participating in a group therapy session where honesty, vulnerability, and self-discovery take center stage. As each woman confronts her past and defines her breaking point, the performance unfolds into a deeply human exploration of identity, resilience, and transformation.

Black Restaurant Week San Antonio

When: February 22 – March 1, 2026
Where: Participating restaurants throughout San Antonio

Black Restaurant Week San Antonio celebrates Black-owned restaurants, food trucks, and culinary professionals across the city. The week highlights a wide range of cuisines, including Jamaican, Nigerian, soul food, barbecue, burgers, and wine tastings, encouraging residents to support local Black-owned businesses.

Black History River Tour

When: February 28, 2026
Where: San Antonio African American Community Archive & Museum (SAAACAM)

This guided River Walk boat tour offers a 100-minute seated journey exploring African American influence and contributions along the San Antonio River. The tour travels from La Villita to the Museum Reach and Pearl District before returning through downtown landmarks near the Alamo and Convention Center. The experience begins at SAAACAM’s exhibit space and provides deeper insight into Black history woven throughout the city.

New African Masquerades: Artistic Innovations and Collaborations

Where: San Antonio Museum of Art

This exhibition showcases contemporary masquerade art by four artists working across West Africa. Through intricately crafted masquerade ensembles and an immersive video experience, visitors explore how masquerades honor family, support creative livelihoods, and evolve through modern technology.

Black Stories: A History of Black Americans in Texas and the Powerful Impact of Storytelling with Poetry and Spoken Word

This two-hour poetry and spoken word workshop explores the history of Black Americans in Texas through storytelling. The session will be led by poet Zenobia Anderson, winner of the 2025 Mosaic African Diaspora Award.

Your Local Community Zine Workshop

When: February 7, 2026 | 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Where: Pan American Library, 1122 W. Pyron Ave., 78221

This hands-on workshop will be facilitated by Office of Historic Preservation Specialist Dr. Charles Gentry and will begin with a discussion of the graphic novel A Home, a Church & a Hospital. Participants will explore community storytelling through zine-making.

Carver Friends Black History Month Breakfast & Lecture

When: February 14, 2026 | 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

The Carver Friends group presents a special Black History Month lecture by Cary Clark focused on Martin Luther King Jr.’s final book, Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community? Breakfast tacos, drinks, and community fellowship will be provided.
