Black History Month Events at San Antonio Public Library

San Antonio’s Public Libraries (SAPL) is celebrating Black History Month with a variety events to still choose from. SAPL’s site states:

This February, SAPL invites the community to celebrate the cultural impact, activism, and achievements of Black people. Below is a selection of some of the Black History Month programming happening at Library locations across San Antonio this month.  

SAPL Black History Month Events: 

Remembering Geraldine Smedler 

Saturday, February 18, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Carver Branch Library (3350 E. Commerce, 78220) 

Geraldine Smedler was a decorated civil servant and civil rights activist, mentor to young leaders and a kind and caring person. Ms. Smedler donated a collection of funeral programs dating back to the 1940s to San Antonio Public Library. She died on May 2, 2022, at the age of 99. Her daughter, Carolyn James will share stories about her life and the legacy she leaves with all of us. 

The Yellow Rose of Texas Re-Examined 

Saturday, February 18, 12:15 – 1:15 p.m.

Carver Branch Library (3350 E. Commerce, 78220) 

Join us as award-winning investigative journalist Denise McVea discusses her historical research into the legend of the Yellow Rose and Emily West de Zavala. Were they the same woman? 

4th Annual San Antonio

African American Book Festival 

Saturday, February 25, 10 a.m. –5 p.m.

Carver Branch Library (3350 E. Commerce, 78220) The 4th Annual San Antonio African American Book Festival (SAAABF) returns to Carver Branch Library/Second Baptist Church Community Center on Saturday, February 25, 2023 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event will include an author pavilion, speakers, discussions, and activities celebrating the power of Black voices in writing and storytelling. The SAAABF is presented by the Friends of Carver Branch Library. This event is for the whole family.
