Coming Soon: A Babyface Documentary From Producer Kenya Barris

The Upcoming Documentary Will Reportedly Feature “Never-Before-Seen” Footage From Babyface’s Personal Archive, Interviews and More

A long-overdue tribute to Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds is finally on the way, with creator Kenya Barris leading production on a new documentary exploring the life, legacy, and influence of the 13-time Grammy winner. The project, first reported by Deadline, promises a deep dive into how a soft-spoken kid from Indianapolis became one of the most defining hitmakers in modern music.

Babyface told Rolling Stone he’s using the documentary to revisit every high and low across his career:

“I’ve often wondered how an unassuming kid from Indianapolis got to where he is today, working with artists and achieving dreams I could’ve never imagined when I first started. This documentary is giving me a chance to go down memory lane with a fine-tooth comb, reexamining the highs and lows of my life and career. I’m discovering where all the songs really came from — and perhaps just as important, the how and why.”

Directed by Chris Moukarbel, the film is backed by HarbourView Equity Partners, a Black woman-founded investment firm that has become a key player in preserving and elevating cultural archives. Barris, the mind behind Black-ish, said working on this story is a full-circle moment:

“Babyface is one of one — a culture-defining hitmaker whose impact cannot be denied or overstated. We’re honored to be a part of telling his story… I hope this project not only spotlights Babyface’s remarkable career but also gives people a glimpse into the man behind the musical genius, who just might be one of the funniest mother*ckers I’ve ever met.”

HarbourView’s Founder and CEO Sherrese Clarke added that Babyface’s body of work “has defined music and artistry for decades” and deserves to be preserved with the depth and intention this project brings.

The documentary will feature conversations with Babyface and interviews with a range of his collaborators, many of whom helped shape some of the most iconic R&B and pop records of the last four decades. The project also includes footage from Babyface’s private archive, including material that has never been shown publicly, plus scenes capturing his upcoming Las Vegas performances.

The goal: to show how Edmonds turned his own heartbreaks and joys into the soundtrack for millions of love stories around the world.

A release date, title, and full list of featured artists have not yet been announced, but expectations are already sky-high. Whenever it drops, the culture will be watching.
