GOP Lawmakers Continue To be Confronted at Town Halls

At a Glance
  • Lawmakers across both parties are facing hostile town halls and protests over Trump’s immigration policies, Medicaid cuts, and the Gaza war.
  • Sen. Susan Collins was heckled at a Maine ribbon-cutting with chants of “Shame!” over Medicare cuts, Gaza, and Trump’s Supreme Court picks.
  • Rep. Barry Moore of Alabama slipped out of his own town hall after sustained heckling and chants of “Shame!” from constituents.
  • Democrats were also pressed for failing to counter Trump effectively, and several events were disrupted or shut down entirely.

Angry Constituents Confront Congress on Immigration, Medicaid Cuts and Gaza

This summer, the few members of Congress who dared to hold public events walked straight into a storm. Town halls across the country turned into verbal battlegrounds, with lawmakers drowned out by boos, heckles, and chants from constituents angry over immigration crackdowns, deep Medicaid cuts, and U.S. support for Israel during the Gaza war.

NBC News tracked 25 town halls nationwide, finding that while Republicans bore the brunt of attacks over Trump’s agenda, Democrats were grilled for not doing enough to fight back.

Immigration Crackdown Sparks Backlash

Trump’s nationwide immigration raids and detention centers dominated the conversation in both Republican and Democratic districts. In Wisconsin, GOP Rep. Bryan Steil was blasted by voters for “following Trump 100% of the time,” while in Virginia, Democratic Rep. Jennifer McClellan’s senior-focused event was consumed by questions about deportations and ICE raids in Chesterfield County.

Medicaid Cuts Become GOP’s Weak Spot

Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” — which cuts nearly $1 trillion in Medicaid spending over the next decade, according to the Congressional Budget Office — left Republicans vulnerable. Nebraska Rep. Mike Flood spent most of his Lincoln town hall reassuring seniors their Medicare wasn’t on the chopping block, but voters jeered as he argued Medicaid had to be reduced.

In California, GOP Rep. Doug LaMalfa’s insistence that the law only “reformed” Medicaid triggered outrage, with one constituent firing back: “That’s bulls—!”

Democrats on Defense Over Party Direction

Democrats weren’t spared either. Colorado Rep. Joe Neguse admitted to a crowd that “there’s no one running to save us,” while Sen. Michael Bennet called Trump’s reelection “catastrophic” and argued Democrats must run on more than just opposition to him. Michigan Sen. Elissa Slotkin warned that young voters were disillusioned with the party’s leadership, pointing to emerging figures like New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani.

Gaza Protests Shut Down Events

The Gaza war sparked fiery clashes across multiple districts. In Washington, Rep. Adam Smith canceled his event after protesters stormed the stage. Rhode Island Sen. Jack Reed and Rep. Seth Magaziner were interrupted with chants of “but not bombs” when Reed touted his limited support for curbing U.S. arms to Israel. Even progressives like Rep. Pramila Jayapal were heckled for not opposing defensive aid.

In Missouri, Rep. Wesley Bell’s town hall ended in chaos when pro-Palestinian protesters clashed with private security, leading to shoving and accusations of excessive force.

Susan Collins Confronted at Ribbon-Cutting

The unrest wasn’t confined to town halls. On Tuesday, Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, was heckled during a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a long-running Route 1 construction project in Searsport. Demonstrators chanting “Shame! Shame! Shame!” confronted her over Medicare cuts, the Gaza war, and Trump’s Supreme Court picks.

When Collins asked for patience to “get through this brief ceremony,” protesters shot back: “We’d like you to listen!” At one point, a demonstrator yelled “Vote Graham Platner!” — referencing the Democrat running against her. Collins later told NBC affiliate WCSH/WLBZ she spoke with some of the protesters on her way out.

Barry Moore Heckled Out of Alabama Town Hall

Rep. Barry Moore, R-Ala., who is running for Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s seat, cut short his own town hall in Baldwin County after relentless heckling. Video showed Moore slipping out a back door as constituents chanted “Shame!”

Moore insisted the next day that he hadn’t ducked out, telling a local radio show, “We left like any other event.” Still, video captured him repeatedly mocked for defending Trump’s Medicaid cuts and immigration policies, and jeered when he praised Trump’s border security.

He briefly won approval when condemning efforts to “erase history,” but otherwise faced questions on tariffs, rural hospitals, abortion, and the deployment of the National Guard.

Security Concerns Heightened After Lawmaker Assassination

The assassination of former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman in June left members of Congress on edge about safety. Some, like Nebraska Rep. Flood, insisted protesters should not be removed for expressing opinions, while others, like Oklahoma Rep. Josh Brecheen, warned constituents they’d be kicked out for disruptions.

Still, the summer’s town halls made clear that for both parties, face-to-face engagement with voters is becoming increasingly volatile — and nearly impossible to control.
