Abbott Rallies at Private School in San Antonio as Local Public Schools Shut Down

Yesterday, Governor Greg Abbott hosted a rally at San Antonio Christian School as part of his latest push for a billionaire-backed private school voucher scam.

His pro-voucher rally — held a few miles down the road from three San Antonio public schools set to close due to insufficient funding from the state — comes just days after Governor Abbott admitted that his private school voucher scam would drain even more money from Texas public schools.

This week, North East ISD announced the closure of three public elementary school campuses — Driscoll, Wilshire, and Clear Spring — to offset a $39 million budget deficit due to Governor Abbott holding school funding hostage in retaliation for the Texas House rejecting his private school voucher scam during the last legislative session.

Rep. James Talarico issued the following statement:

“Governor Abbott is hosting a rally at an expensive private school in San Antonio while families in that very community mourn the closure of three neighborhood public schools. Those schools are closing because Greg Abbott deliberately starved them of funding to pressure lawmakers into passing his billionaire-backed voucher scam.
“Greg Abbott’s voucher scam would continue to drain taxpayer dollars from underfunded public schools like Driscoll, Wilshire and Clear Spring — the three North East ISD campuses that were set to close this week — and give them to unaccountable private schools like San Antonio Christian School. The Governor isn’t working for the nearly 6 million Texas public school students — he's working for the billionaires writing $6 million checks.”
