Hip Hop Legends Sound Alarm Over BET’s Decision
Hip-hop icons Fat Joe and Jadakiss are speaking out against BET’s recent suspension of its long-running Hip Hop Awards, warning that the move represents more than just a temporary programming change. On their show Joe and Jada, the duo reflected on the decline of the awards over the years, citing deep budget cuts and corporate takeover as major culprits.
“[This] is just a loss for the culture,” Jadakiss said. Fat Joe took it further, calling the move “a form of gentrification” in entertainment.
From Black-Owned to Corporate Hands
Fat Joe traced the network’s shift to when founder Bob Johnson sold BET to Viacom Paramount, placing it under the same umbrella as MTV and VH1. According to Joe, the corporate transition led to staff layoffs and the quiet removal of voices that championed Black culture.
“I’ve been working on the BET Hip-Hop Awards for three years,” he said. “The budget… just kept getting chopped and chopped and chopped.” Comparing it to the well-funded VMAs, Joe said the Hip Hop Awards were left without the resources to innovate.
Underfunding and the Erosion of Cultural Spaces
Joe described the repeated budget cuts as a creative chokehold:
“They kept underfunding them… you might as well have called it the independent awards.”
For both rappers, the cancellation feels like part of a broader pattern where spaces created for Black culture are diminished once under corporate control.
BET’s Official Stance and the Uncertain Future
BET CEO Scott Mills confirmed that both the Hip Hop Awards and the Soul Train Awards have been suspended but framed it as a strategic pause. “It’s less about them being no longer and more about our team having to reimagine them for this changing media landscape,” Mills said.
Still, Joe and Jadakiss believe “the writing is on the wall” and worry that the main BET Awards could be next.
“No Soul Train, No BET Hip Hop Awards, but guess what we got the VMAs,” Joe said.
“That ain’t for us,” Jadakiss responded. “Save Hip Hop. Save the Awards.”
