Antonio Gates Headlines a Unique Hall of Fame Class
Alongside the Sharpe brothers, the 2025 Hall of Fame class also welcomed Eric Allen, Jared Allen, and Antonio Gates. The ceremony took place at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium, where the Chargers routed the Lions 34–7 in the NFL preseason opener.
Antonio Gates’s journey was anything but conventional. The former Kent State basketball star never played a down of college football yet ended up becoming one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history. Gates, now the 23rd undrafted Hall of Famer, thanked Coach Tim Brewster for recognizing his raw talent. “The unexpected are often the most powerful,” Gates said, tearing up mid-speech. “NFL scouts will never look at college basketball players the same again.”
Gates finished his career with 955 catches, 11,841 yards, and 116 touchdowns—all with the Chargers.
Jared Allen’s Cowboy Swagger and Defensive Dominance
Wearing his signature cowboy hat, Jared Allen brought grit and heart to the stage. A five-time Pro Bowler with 136 career sacks, Allen spoke of the motivations that fueled his career: “fear, respect, and the pursuit of greatness.” He credited his “why” not just for his football success but for his role as a father, husband, and Christian.
Allen’s dominant 12-year career spanned the Chiefs, Vikings, Bears, and Panthers, ending with a Super Bowl 50 appearance.
Eric Allen Reflects on a Career of Commitment
Former cornerback Eric Allen, who recorded 54 career interceptions, including eight returned for touchdowns, was introduced by one of his four sons. The six-time Pro Bowler and longtime Eagle brought emotion and team pride, thanking both the Eagles and Raiders, and giving a shoutout to late Raiders owner Al Davis.
“We are trying to make sure we fulfill that destiny,” Allen said, referencing Davis’s iconic motto: “Commitment to excellence.”
