Deion Sanders Quietly Battled Bladder Cancer and Is Now Cancer-Free and Back to Coach
Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders revealed that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of bladder cancer earlier this year. After undergoing surgery to remove his bladder and rebuild a new one using part of his intestine, Sanders is now cancer-free and preparing to coach the Colorado Buffaloes this upcoming season.
The football legend kept the diagnosis private until now, sharing that he didn’t want to distract his sons—who were focused on the NFL Draft—so he told them he was dealing with a foot issue. He admitted that during the toughest part of his treatment in May, he prepared a will, reflecting on the emotional toll of facing his own mortality.
Sanders described the process as humbling and physically taxing. He lost about 25 pounds during treatment and said he had to adapt to a new lifestyle. That included managing bladder control with adult diapers and even joking about needing a portable toilet on the sidelines this fall.
Despite those challenges, Sanders never wavered. His athletic trainers and medical team praised his spirit, determination, and unshakable faith. According to Sanders, there was never a doubt in his mind that he would come out on the other side and return to doing what he loves.
Now, Sanders is set to begin his third season as head coach at Colorado. The Buffaloes kick off their season on August 29 at Folsom Field against Georgia Tech. His return to the field is not just a testament to his leadership but to his resilience in the face of a life-threatening diagnosis.
Coach Prime’s journey serves as a reminder that even the strongest face silent battles—and that overcoming them can inspire far beyond the locker room.
