TikTok Prepares New U.S. App Ahead of Possible Ban and Forced Sale

TikTok New U.S. App to Launch as Ban Deadline Nears

TikTok is bracing for a critical shift in the U.S. market. With a nationwide ban looming, the social media giant is reportedly preparing to launch a new version of its app for American users on September 5, just days before a government-imposed deadline for ByteDance to sell its U.S. operations.

The move comes as the Chinese-owned company faces mounting political pressure from the Trump administration, which has cited national security concerns over TikTok’s data practices and ties to China. If ByteDance fails to divest its American arm by September 17, TikTok could be removed from app stores across the U.S., leaving its more than 170 million American users in limbo.

ByteDance Faces Pressure From Trump Administration

The new app is being framed as a workaround to the U.S. government’s demand to sever TikTok’s Chinese ties. According to The Information, the current app could be shut down by March 2026, forcing users to switch to the new platform. Analysts believe the updated app will include backend changes intended to address national security issues, though ByteDance has consistently denied sharing data with the Chinese government.

President Trump, who extended the original January 2025 divestment deadline by 90 days, has changed his stance from banning TikTok to publicly supporting its presence in the U.S. During his re-election campaign, he even pitched himself as a pro-TikTok candidate, telling followers: “Those who want to save TikTok in America, vote for Trump.”

Tech Giants Eye Potential TikTok Deal

Potential buyers for TikTok’s U.S. operations include Oracle, Amazon, and a Frank McCourt-led group backed by “Shark Tank” investor Kevin O’Leary. An AI startup, Perplexity, has also expressed interest in redesigning the algorithm—though analysts doubt China would allow TikTok’s core technology, its recommendation algorithm, to be sold as part of any deal.

Trump has teased that a deal is being discussed with China this week but declined to reveal buyer details, stating only: “It’s money, it’s a lot of money.”

Uncertainty Ahead, but User Demand Remains Strong

Ray Wang of Constellation Research says TikTok’s massive U.S. user base ensures that “there will be a transition period,” but the platform’s popularity is unlikely to fade, even under new ownership. “The question is how will data be migrated, and I’m sure they will have a solution for that,” he said.

While ByteDance has remained silent on the specifics of the new app, TikTok creators are already preparing for all scenarios. Many have begun diversifying their content to platforms like Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, anticipating disruptions. Still, most believe their audiences will follow.
