Mentorship in Motion: Davis, YMLA, and Sam Houston H.S.

Ties That Lead: Mentoring at Davis and YMLA Middle Schools

J.L. August Bridge Builders Mentoring kicked off the month of May by pouring into young minds at Davis Middle School, Sam Houston High School and the Young Men’s Leadership Academy (YMLA).

At Davis, during the May 7 session, students explored the themes of potential, purpose, and preparation. They also discussed the upcoming scholarship luncheon and what it means to strive for excellence. The highlight of the day? Each student earned a purple tie—a symbol of leadership, dignity, and commitment to personal growth. That tie now serves as a reminder that they are preparing to step confidently into their future.

Meanwhile at YMLA, the session focused on confidence and communication. Students practiced public speaking and learned how to tie a Windsor knot, helping them present themselves with pride. They also opened up about why mentoring matters to them, with many sharing personal reflections on how it’s helped shape their mindset and goals.

“Their honesty and growth continue to inspire us,” said the Bridge Builders team.

From Sam Houston to FAMU: Alumni Return to Inspire

On May 13, 2025, Bridge Builders hosted a special session at Davis Middle School and Sam Houston High School, featuring guest speakers Bryson and Bruce Adams II, brothers and proud Sam Houston alumni now attending Florida A&M University (FAMU).

Bruce Adams II, a recent FAMU graduate with a Bachelor’s in Architecture, spoke about perseverance and the importance of adaptability and project management in the transition from high school to college.

Bryson Adams, a freshman and section leader in FAMU’s legendary “Marching 100” band, shared his journey of growth, discipline, and his dream of becoming a drum major. He opened up about the challenges of adjusting to college and how setting goals and staying focused helped him stay on track.

Together, the Adams brothers delivered a powerful message on discipline, goal-setting, and the value of higher education—showing the young men in attendance what’s possible with hard work and commitment.

A Community Uplifted

Through hands-on mentoring, role model visits, and consistent engagement, J.L. August Bridge Builders is creating a pipeline of confident, prepared, and inspired young leaders. May isn’t even over yet—and they’ve already left a mark.

Their work across schools in San Antonio continues to remind students: you don’t have to wait to be great—you just need the right tools, guidance, and belief.
