Nelly Defends Performing at Trump Inauguration Ball

Nelly Addresses Criticism for Performing at Trump’s Inauguration

Rapper Nelly has responded to backlash surrounding his decision to perform at Donald Trump’s 2025 inauguration. In an interview on Willie D Live, the 50-year-old artist explained his perspective, emphasizing that his choice was not rooted in political allegiance.

Nelly: “I’m Not Political”

During the interview, Nelly made it clear that his decision to perform was not about endorsing Trump or influencing others’ political opinions. “I’m not political… I’m clueless on a lot of things when it gets down to it,” he admitted, urging people to do their own research when forming opinions.

Nelly, who rose to fame with his 2000 album Country Grammar, expressed disappointment in the backlash from fans. “I thought you was riding with me because I put on for my city,” said the St. Louis native. He emphasized that his career has been defined by action, not political rhetoric. “If you follow what I do, this shouldn’t even be an argument.”

Honoring the Office, Not the Politics

Born on a military base and raised in a family with a strong military background, Nelly compared his decision to perform at the inauguration to the apolitical nature of military service. “If these people can give their life for the office, Nelly can perform,” he explained. Over the years, the rapper has frequently performed for U.S. troops, reinforcing his respect for the office of the presidency rather than the individual holding it.

Not About the Money

Addressing accusations that he accepted the performance for financial reasons, Nelly dismissed the claims. “I’m not doing this for money,” he said. “I’m doing this because it’s an honor. I respect the office.”

The rapper also revealed that he had not received an invitation to perform for Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign, responding humorously, “She didn’t invite me.”

Historical Backlash for Performing at Trump Events

Nelly’s decision comes in the wake of other artists receiving criticism for their association with Trump’s events. In 2017, singer Chrisette Michele faced significant backlash for performing at Trump’s first inauguration, while other artists declined the opportunity.

More recently, performers like Snoop Dogg and Soulja Boy have faced scrutiny for participating in Trump’s 2025 inauguration festivities. Despite this, Nelly remains resolute in his choice. “[Trump’s] the president. He won. This isn’t a campaign,” he stated, reaffirming his apolitical stance.

Nelly’s decision to perform at Trump’s inauguration underscores his respect for the institution of the presidency, separate from political affiliations. While his choice has drawn criticism, the rapper stands by his belief in honoring the office and staying true to his values.
