Aaliyah Barbie Doll Honors Iconic Singer and Sells Out on Launch
Mattel has released a Barbie doll in honor of Aaliyah, the late R&B legend, on what would have been her 46th birthday. The collectible, part of Barbie’s Music Series, sold out almost immediately upon its launch, reflecting the enduring love for Aaliyah’s music and style.
Celebrating Aaliyah’s Legacy
The doll pays tribute to Aaliyah’s influence on music and fashion, capturing her iconic look from the “One in a Million” music video. Featuring a sleeveless faux leather vest, black crop top, silver-studded pants, and her signature aviator sunglasses, the design embodies the edgy, confident style Aaliyah was known for.
“Aaliyah’s smooth vocals and innovative sound helped shape ’90s R&B, and her influence on music and fashion continues to be felt today,” Mattel shared on its listing for the doll.
Family Collaboration on the Doll’s Design
Aaliyah’s brother, Rashad Haughton, worked closely with Mattel on the project and praised the doll’s attention to detail. “It’s still tight-fitting; it’s still a little bit sexy. But it’s pants, so it brings that power and confidence,” he said, emphasizing how the design reflects Aaliyah’s personality and Barbie’s themes of empowerment and self-expression.
Availability and Other Barbie Music Icons
Initially priced at $55 for Barbie Club 59 members, the Aaliyah Barbie doll will be available again at Target for $55.99 starting January 26. This gives fans another chance to own a piece of the singer’s legacy.
Aaliyah joins other music icons in the Barbie Music Series, including Gloria Estefan, Tina Turner, and Stevie Nicks. Known for timeless hits like “Are You That Somebody” and “Try Again,” Aaliyah’s groundbreaking 1996 album One in a Million went double platinum, cementing her place as an R&B trailblazer before her untimely passing at age 22 in a 2001 plane crash.
