The former talk show host has been under a court-ordered guardianship since 2022
Wendy Williams, the veteran talk show host, is reaching out for public support in her fight for freedom, a year after a revealing documentary highlighted concerns about her health. Williams, 60, has been under a court-ordered conservatorship since 2022 and diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and primary progressive aphasia in 2023. However, she insists she is “not cognitively impaired.”
In an exclusive Thursday morning interview with The Breakfast Club, Williams shared her frustration. “I am not cognitively impaired. But I feel like I am in prison,” she stated. Host Charlamagne Tha God introduced her call, explaining that she wanted to speak out because she feels “trapped.”
Describing her current situation, Williams said, “I’m in this place where the people are in their 90s and their 80s and their 70s. There’s something wrong with these people here on this floor.” She called her conservatorship “emotional abuse,” adding, “This system is broken.”
Williams revealed she is confined to a maximum-security care facility, where she spends her days isolated in her room, staring out the window. She no longer has her cats and is barred from accessing her finances or even her phone. “I just sit here,” she said, expressing the toll the situation has taken on her.
Her niece, Alex, joined the interview to confirm Williams’ claims. According to Alex, Williams’ court-appointed guardian, Sabrina Morrissey, has control of her aunt’s older phone and restricts her access to money. Any purchases must be made through someone else. “That’s been the reality since 2023,” Alex stated.
Williams’ revelations shed light on the challenges she faces under the conservatorship, adding her voice to ongoing debates about guardianship systems and their impact.
