LeBron James Breaks Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s NBA Regular Season Minutes Record
LeBron James added another milestone to his legendary career on Thursday night, becoming the NBA’s all-time leader in regular season minutes played. The Los Angeles Lakers star surpassed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s 35-year-old record during the team’s 113-100 victory over the Sacramento Kings at Golden 1 Center.
Entering his 22nd NBA season, James began the game with 57,437 minutes on the clock—just 10 minutes shy of Abdul-Jabbar’s record of 57,446 minutes. He broke the record in the second quarter and ended the night with 57,471 total minutes after logging 34 minutes on the court.
“It’s a pretty cool honor,” James said postgame. “Anytime I’m linked with some of the greats to ever play this game, it’s humbling. To know I’ve been available to my teammates and played at a high level for two decades is very special.”
A Legacy of Longevity and Consistency
This achievement is just one in a series of historic milestones for James, who last season became the NBA’s all-time leader in total minutes played—including playoffs—surpassing Abdul-Jabbar’s record of 66,297 minutes during a November 2023 game against the Philadelphia 76ers.
Reflecting on the significance of both records, James noted their interconnected importance. “You set your mark in the regular season to prepare for the postseason,” he said. “I’ve been fortunate to have deep playoff runs and play meaningful basketball. Both records hold special meaning; you can’t have one without the other.”
Milestones Beyond Minutes Played
James’ career is defined by groundbreaking accomplishments. Earlier this season, he made history by sharing the court with his son, Bronny James, marking the first father-son duo to play in an NBA game. The four-time MVP is also the league’s all-time leading scorer, a four-time NBA champion, and holds the record for 20 All-Star appearances. Since being drafted first overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2003, James has continued to redefine the limits of basketball greatness.
At 39 years old, James remains a dominant force in the league, averaging 22.6 points, 7.9 rebounds, and nine assists per game this season. His unparalleled durability and performance over two decades have cemented his status as one of basketball’s greatest players.
