2 HBCUs Designated as Patent and Trademark Resource Centers

USPTO reaches historic milestone of 100 Patent and Trademark Resource Centers in libraries across the country, U.S. territories

Reaching a Milestone: 100 PTRCs Across the Nation

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) celebrates a historic achievement with the addition of Tuskegee University and the University of the Virgin Islands to the Patent and Trademark Resource Centers (PTRC) network, reaching 100 PTRCs across the U.S. and its territories. These universities are now among the seven Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) designated as PTRCs.

Empowering Innovation with Free Resources

PTRCs are crucial in supporting innovation by offering free guidance to inventors, entrepreneurs, and creators. Through specialized librarians, these centers provide assistance on patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets. In 2023, PTRCs served nearly 6,000 individuals, offering workshops, consultations, and tailored community services.

Fueling Economic Growth Through IP

Partnering with PTRCs is a key strategy for the USPTO to ensure equitable access to intellectual property (IP) resources. A 2020 study revealed the significant economic impact of patents, with startups seeing a cumulative increase of 16 employees and $10.6 million in sales over five years after securing their first patent.

A National Strategy for Inclusive Innovation

As part of its National Strategy for Inclusive Innovation, the USPTO launched a 2023 campaign encouraging libraries to join the PTRC network. The effort resulted in a 20% increase in PTRCs nationwide, including six new HBCU designations. This growth reflects the expanding demand for resources that drive local economies and support entrepreneurial success.

HBCUs: Catalysts for Economic Mobility

HBCUs have long been pivotal in fostering economic opportunities and intellectual property development within Black communities. Their inclusion in the PTRC network underscores their critical role in promoting innovation and intergenerational economic mobility.

Free Assistance Right at Your Fingertips

USPTO Director Kathi Vidal highlights the importance of accessible resources: “We want everyone to know about and benefit from the free resources available to grow and protect their business. PTRCs make a tremendous impact on communities by supporting creators at every step of their journey.”

Tuskegee University Joins the Innovation Network

Tuskegee University’s designation as a PTRC marks an exciting chapter for its library system. “We are pleased to support university and community members in accessing essential patent and trademark search tools,” said Juanita M. Roberts, Director of Library Services.
