SAC’s Empowerment Center Expands to Meet Growing Needs

San Antonio College’s Empowerment Center celebrated a new chapter with the grand opening of its expanded location on December 4. This milestone is more than just a bigger space—it’s a commitment to supporting underrepresented and non-traditional students in ways that reflect the realities of modern life.

Veterans – Working Parents – Dreamers – Adult Learners

With $1 million in federal funding secured by Congressman Greg Casar through the Community Project Funding initiative, the new facility brings resources tailored to veterans, working parents, Dreamers, and adult learners seeking a pathway back to education.

“What we are going to be doing is expanding—adding services for military families, career development, and parent outreach,” explained Dr. Mary Helen Vera, Director of the Empowerment Center. “We’re seeing an increase in referrals from community organizations, and this new facility allows us to provide tailored support to help individuals transition into college and career pathways.”

The upgraded center includes a Transition to College Career Lab, a college enrollment lab, and larger community spaces for classes and events. Notably, the center now offers parent engagement programs and a lactation room for student parents—an intentional step toward creating a more inclusive and family-friendly environment.

Dream Center

Another major addition is the Dream Center, a dedicated space where student leadership groups can collaborate and plan initiatives. This new resource is set to empower students, particularly those navigating unique challenges such as immigration or career transitions, to connect and thrive.

“For many, returning to education can feel intimidating,” Vera shared. “Our one-on-one services ensure individuals who may not have access to technology or feel comfortable navigating the process get the personalized help they need.”

Bridging Gaps

By bridging gaps between community referrals and college enrollment, the Empowerment Center is making higher education more accessible and less overwhelming for those who need it most. The mission is clear: break down barriers, provide meaningful support, and empower students to reach their goals.

With this expansion, SAC continues to show that higher education isn’t just about classrooms—it’s about creating a space where every student, no matter their background, feels welcomed, supported, and capable of success.
