Controversial Pick’s of Trump’s Cabinet and Other Officials Spark Debate Around Country. Will This Be The Demise of Our Democracy?
As the country looks ahead towards 2025, we are again observing in real time constant threats to the rule of law and the democracy that it previously worked under.
In past administrations, we the people were beneficiaries of legislation that provided us with Social Security and minimum wage, thanks to Franklin Roosevelt’s leadership.
“Government That’s Changed People’s Way of Life”
Most recently the Biden administration has given the people a “government that’s changed people’s way of life”, in the form of legislation such as the Chips Manufacturing Act and the Infrastructure Act, which has led to job creation for rebuilding roads and bridges, as well as policies that allow for refunds when airlines cancel passengers flights. The former president’s first term has given us nothing but tax cuts, tariffs and higher prices.
With that said, we have to now consider the recent appointments for Cabinet positions which are raising concerns about qualifications and skills sets for the various posts that need to be filled.
Sex with Minors?
For Attorney General, the nominee is former Florida Representative Matt Gaetz, who had been investigated by the House Ethics Committee for allegedly having sex with an underage teen and allegedly having used drugs. Once nominated, Gaetz resigned from his position as a representative. Can you imagine the country’s top lawyer on drugs or having engaged in the behavior previously described?
Tulsi’s Admiration For Putin, Skipping FBI Background Checks
The pick for the head of National Intelligence – former Democratic Representative Tulsi Gabbard, has expressed her admiration for Russian president Vladimir Putin and appears to prefer his winning the war with Ukraine, a reduction of NATO presence along Russia’s borders.
The Senate will undoubtedly have it’s hands full with the upcoming confirmation hearings for all of the nominees for the Cabinet positions. Reports have surfaced that the Trump transition team “wants to skip the FBI background checks”, for some cabinet picks, seeking to nominate individuals who most likely are MAGA supporters – qualified or not, without the advise and consent of the Senate. Which is an example of the former president’s desire to “be a dictator on day one” and will further the implementation of Project 2025, which is seen as a direct threat to the Constitution and democracy.
”Anti-Qualified”
Included in the Project 2025’s agenda is the dismantling of the Department of Education, attacking federal land use regulations in the Department of the Interior and overhauling both the Departments of Defense and Justice.
What citizens must do is to maintain one’s own sense of what is good – to get past what’s already happened and to “prioritize getting early wins versus this style of governing.” Seemingly, the incoming administration has decided to be “anti – qualified”, being tasked to do something they’re not qualified to do and attempting to make the U. S. government appear “dysfunctional”, while hoping for little or no resistance.
As we have previously noted: elections have both benefits and consequences. We must sustain our efforts to reap the former rather than allow the imposition of the latter.
