WNBA Potential Work Stoppage

WNBA Players Opt Out of CBA

A day after the New York Liberty won their first WNBA championship, the Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) opted out of the current collective bargaining agreement that expires on Oct. 31, 2025.

After a 2024 season of exponential growth in TV ratings, attendance, and franchise valuations, and with a new 11-year, $2.2 billion media rights deal kicking in for the 2026 season, the players are asking for a business model they believe better reflects their value.

They’re asking for higher salaries, better working conditions and health benefits, and greater investments in the game. As the league still loses money overall, a potential work stoppage is in play if a new agreement isn’t worked out over the next year.
