Unclogging Gibbs Sprawl & Rittiman Road

$4.8 Million Grant Allocated to Enhance Railroad Crossing Intersection on Rittiman Road

The City of San Antonio was granted $4.8 million on Monday, June 5, to tackle the traffic problem at the Union Pacific railroad crossing at Gibbs Sprawl and Rittiman Road. This much-needed funding will be utilized for designing and conducting an environmental review for an overpass. The intersection of Rittiman Road and Gibbs Sprawl Road has long been a major concern for the residents of the north east side of San Antonio due to public safety issues, traffic congestion, and infrastructure requirements.

Councilman McKee-Rodriguez, who serves on the Intergovernmental Relations Committee and the Transportation & Mobility Committee, played a role in advocating for funding solutions in this area. During Bond meetings and open office hours in the Fall of 2021, District 2 residents and others affected by this intersection voiced their frustrations and concerns about the negative impact of railroad crossings on their community and the main routes they rely on to access their homes, workplaces, and schools.

Expressing gratitude for the additional funding, the District 2 Councilman stated, “We are immensely thankful for this funding, which will help resolve one of the most disruptive issues in District 2. The selection of San Antonio, particularly District 2, for federal funding by the United States Department of Transportation is truly remarkable. We hope that more funding priorities focused on equity will be met in the future.”
