Fred Brock Post 828 Legionnaire Elected to Lead Local Nursing Sorority
The membership of Theta Eta Chapter, Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc., held their annual elections re-electing Sandra Evans as president. Evans, a 12-year veteran of the U.S. Army, is a new member of The American Legion joining Fred Brock Post No. 828 in early 2023, along with her husband.
Under her leadership, many within her chapter have joined the Post as either a legionnaire or a member of the Auxiliary. Those include Donna Arbuthnot, Lorri Hays, Tesha Leggett, Amanda Parham, Renee Pate, Rochelle Staten, Sonya Muzyka Velma, Juanita Toni Williams, and Carmen Woods.
When asked why she thought it was important to be a member of The American Legion she stated, “For me, it is humanitarianism. I want to be part of an organization that gives back to the community and be a member of an organization whose mission is to serve others.”
According to Evans, who is a registered nurse, it is important to surround oneself with like-minded individuals. It is difficult to find a bond as strong as that which is shared between military members.
She has seen military veterans within her chapter have a higher degree of adaptability, good leadership skills, and a proactive approach to the sorority.
“They have a higher level of integrity and resiliency. They’ve learned to adapt to new situations and make do with what they have,” said Evans, who volunteers at the Post. “They’re self-sufficient, trustworthy, and work toward the good of the chapter.”
Asked why she chose to be a nurse, she said, “My nurturing nature has been ingrained in me ever since I was a child. When it came to going to college, I had two options: I could either become a nurse or I could become a teacher. Because I grew up with a mother who was a teacher, I wanted a different career path.”
She stated that she was very interested in science, specifically biology.
“My understanding of how my body works, how it becomes ill, and how to heal it, has been life changing,” said Evans. “Giving others assistance they need to return to full health is what nursing is.”
She continued.
“My favorite part of my job was knowing that I had saved someone’s life or made a difference in their life because of what I had done. To be able to nurture someone back to health is like being in possession of a Midas touch. It is beyond comprehension.”
Fred Brock Post 828 is extremely proud of Evans and that work that Theta Eta Chapter does in the community.
Theta Eta Chapter is nestled in the heart of San Antonio, and part of the Middle-South Region. They were chartered on Dec. 8, 1984, by 12 registered nurses with a vision of expanding on health promotion and disease prevention, leadership development, mentoring, recruitment, retention and providing nursing scholarships within San Antonio and surrounding communities.
