The City of San Antonio World Heritage Office announces its 2023 Outdoor Family Film Series at Mission Marquee Plaza, 3100 Roosevelt Ave., 78214 beginning Saturday, May 6, and running through Saturday, November 18, 2023. Free outdoor movies will be screened every first and third Saturday and third Thursday of each month. On these days, Mission Marquee Plaza will open at 7 p.m. and movies will begin shortly after dusk. Attendees are invited to bring lawn chairs, blankets, picnics, and snacks. Local food trucks will also be onsite at each movie screening with foods and beverages for purchase.

The Outdoor Family Film Series kicks off this Saturday with a screening of “The Lion King”. Scheduled activities include live music and entertainment by the Network for Young Artists (NYA), free face painting, and other family-friendly activities. The May 6 event will also include the announcement and screening of the 2023 #FilmSA Contest winning selections. The contest is managed by the City of San Antonio Department of Arts & Culture’s Film Commission in partnership with the World Heritage Office.

A few of the featured movies scheduled for this season are “Grease” on Thursday, May 18; “School of Rock” on Thursday, June 15; “Top Gun, Maverick” on Saturday, July 15; “Selena” on Thursday, September 21; and others. The 2023 Outdoor Family Film Series selections include recommendations by the community collected through an open call via social media at the beginning of the year. The full schedule is available at MissionMarquee.com.

“Mission Marquee Plaza is located in the heart of District 3, however, this community facility is for all San Antonio residents and visitors to enjoy,” said District 3 Councilwoman Phyllis Viagran. “Feedback and engagement from the community are crucial to a successful programming season, which is reflected in this year’s schedule. All of San Antonio is invited to join us at Mission Marquee Plaza.”

This year’s programming season at Mission Marquee Plaza began in March and will include nearly 80 events through November. In addition to the outdoor movies, Mission Marquee Plaza also hosts two farmers & artisans markets each month that include a free community wellness/fitness event at the beginning of each market. The facility also features free cultural events that showcase San Antonio’s diverse and rich living heritage. Scheduled special events and programming include the Viva Mexico Women’s Festival this Sunday, May 7, a Hispanic Heritage Month celebration in September, Dia de los Muertos in October 28, special outdoor exhibits, and others.

“Community involvement and response to our programming schedule at the Mission Marquee Plaza has been extraordinary,” said Colleen Swain, Director of the World Heritage Office. “We have been thrilled at the level of interest by local vendors seeking to participate in our outdoor markets, movies, and cultural events such as Viva Poesia, which was recently held in April. We’re honored that San Antonio residents and visitors alike continue to embrace Mission Marquee Plaza as place where the community can come together.”

Nestled near the historic San Antonio Missions, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Mission Marquee Plaza continues the site’s long tradition as a community gathering space by hosting seasonal events including free movie screenings, farmers markets, cultural events, music and literary festivals, and more. In 2007, the City of San Antonio acquired the former Mission Drive-In property. In June 2014, Mission Marquee Plaza officially opened its doors for the next generation of nearby Southside families and all of San Antonio residents and visitors to enjoy.
