Gov. Abbott’s 2018 Gun Safety ‘Policies’ Have Failed

Hello SAISD Parents,

I know that most of my parents and community are familiar with the saying, “what you do in the night will come to light.”  So let the sun shine on our Governor Abbott and Lt. Governor Patrick because they seem more interested in getting re-elected than saving lives.

We are all mourning those lost in Uvalde, it seems another committee has been created to review the videos from that day. Yet, in 2019, they both started a committee to check the videos of other mass shootings and develop a better safety plan. This committee reviewed other mass shootings in El Paso, Midland Odessa, Dallas, Sutherland Springs, and Santa Fe. Governor Abbott appointed 50 people to this committee to ensure these shootings would stop. In a statement from the report, he states, “Together, we will ensure a safe and secure future for our state while also upholding the constitutional rights of all Texans.” As of today, we’re still dealing with the same issues. Will this new committee find a better way to solve this crisis to ensure our schools are safe or will it just be another report that justifies all the millions we have wasted? Maybe these reports make them feel less guilty as they take donations and awards from the National Rifle Association. The bottom line is that the past two legislations, Governor Abbott, and Lt. Governor Patrick, have loosened the gun laws in Texas despite the report and loss of our loved ones. As of June 1, 2022, the Governor said there would be random safety audits of all of our schools starting in October. At this point, we don’t know if law enforcement will be notified. We need a better plan after all; these are our loved ones, these are humans. So, let’s ask them how much we, the community, and parents must donate to make them get up and do something.

I wonder if their words of sympathy to all those mourning in Uvalde were really from their hearts? After all, it seems that the reality is they are a part of what happened on that awful day. As a community, we need to find a way to help stop all this violence because no one should lose a loved one at school or anywhere. I am encouraging everyone to use their right to vote because it’s time for new leadership in Texas. Parents, please keep all who lost a loved one in Uvalde in our prayers.

Lastly, please wear your mask because COVID cases are rising again in our city. Therefore, we must go back to following all the safety protocols the CDC has implemented. If anyone has any questions or concerns, please contact me at lena.lopez@saobserver.com.  Have a Blessed Week.
