Spurs Surge Past Kings in Second Half, Snap Losing Streak
The Spurs are now 5-6 following Monday’s home win against Sacramento. The Silver and Black were able to overcome twelve first half turnovers that resulted in 18 points for the Kings as they took a five point lead into the break. The Spurs dominated the Kings in the second half outscoring them 56-41 enroute to a 116-96 victory.
Wembanyama Leads With Season High
VDub led all scorers with a season high 34 points on 13-22 fg. He also led all players with 14 rebounds. Chris Paul added a double-double with 12 points and 11 assists while Harrison Barnes chipped in 10 points in his first game against his former team since he was acquired by the Spurs in the offseason.
De’Aron Fox led the Kings with 24 points while Domantas Sabonis had a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Former Spur and first year King DeMar DeRozan added 21 points.
159 Career Three Pointers
The Spurs set a new season high with 22 three-pointers against the Kings, surpassing their previous high of 16, which they had made just two nights earlier in a narrow 111-110 home loss to the Jazz.
Julian Champagnie was 3-8 from three giving him 159 career threes. This set the franchise record for the most 3’s in the first 100 games eclipsing the previous mark of 153 held by Gary Neal.
The Wild West
While the Western Conference is still the wild west with only two games separating the sixth seeded Grizzlies (7-4) and the first place Thunder(9-2), the Spurs are currently twelfth in the Conference. They are just one game behind Sacramento in the tenth spot and just two games behind Memphis.
The Spurs are still without Jeremy Sochan (15.4 ppg) who is out with a fracture in the proximal phalanx of his left thumb during last Monday’s game against the Clippers. Sochan is scheduled to undergo surgery this week.
The team is also still without Coach Popovich who’s been sidelined indefinitely with an undisclosed illness he suffered prior to San Antonio’s home win against the Timberwolves last week.
The Spurs will look to make it two in a row when they face the Wizards Wednesday at the Frost Bank Center.
