Gregg Popovich Steps Down as Head Coach, Named Spurs President of Basketball Operations
After nearly three decades leading the San Antonio Spurs from the bench, Gregg Popovich is stepping into a new role. The organization announced today that Popovich will officially transition from head coach to president of basketball operations, capping a legendary coaching run that helped define an era in NBA history.
In a heartfelt statement, Popovich said:
While my love and passion for the game remain, I’ve decided it’s time to step away as head coach. I’m forever grateful to the wonderful players, coaches, staff and fans who allowed me to serve them as the Spurs head coach and am excited for the opportunity to continue to support the organization, community and city that are so meaningful to me.
Popovich holds the record for most regular season wins by a head coach in NBA history, amassing 1,422 victories and five NBA championships over 29 seasons. His leadership has shaped the Spurs into one of the most respected franchises in sports.
Spurs Managing Partner Peter J. Holt praised Popovich’s influence:
Coach Pop’s extraordinary impact on our family, San Antonio, the Spurs and the game of basketball is profound. His accolades and awards don’t do justice to the impact he has had on so many people. He is truly one-of-one as a person, leader and coach.
Popovich began his NBA journey in 1988 with the Spurs as an assistant under Larry Brown and spent two seasons with Golden State before returning to San Antonio—where he’s remained ever since. He also led Team USA to Olympic gold in Tokyo in 2020.
While his presence on the sideline will be missed, Popovich’s continued leadership in the front office ensures his legacy in San Antonio basketball remains firmly intact.
