2026 Texas Primary Election: See The Winners & Runoffs

Texas Primary Sets the Stage for November General Election

Updated at March 4, 2026 at 7:15 a.m: Polls have closed across Texas, and while some ballots are still being counted, most major races have now been called.

On Tuesday, March 3, Texans headed to the polls to choose the candidates who will represent their party on the ballot in the November general election.

After eight days of early voting, turnout across Texas surged. More than 2.5 million ballots were cast before Election Day, setting a record pace for a midterm primary.

Early voting in Bexar County also climbed sharply compared with the last midterm cycle. According to the Bexar County Elections Department, more than 35,000 voters cast ballots on the final day of early voting, bringing the unofficial total to 183,287 ballots.

U.S. Senate (Statewide)

Democratic Primary

James Talarico defeated Jasmine Crockett in blockbuster Democratic primary for U.S. Senate.

Results:

Winner: James Talarico – 848,548 votes – 52.0%
Jasmine Crockett – 761,664 votes – 46.7%
Ahmad Hassan – 21,060 votes – 1.3%

Republican Primary

With 67 percent of votes counted, the Associated Press projects that incumbent Sen. John Cornyn and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton will advance to a runoff election after neither candidate secured a majority of the vote.

Results:

Runoff: John Cornyn (incumbent) – 670,692 votes – 42.4%
Runoff: Ken Paxton – 644,794 votes – 40.8%
Wesley Hunt – 205,872 votes – 13.0%
Sara Canady – 18,361 votes – 1.2%
Anna Bender – 17,313 votes – 1.1%

Earlier in the evening, some results from Dallas County began to post after a court ordered polling locations there to remain open two additional hours due to voting disruptions. The Texas Supreme Court later ruled that ballots cast during the extended voting period should be set aside while the dispute is reviewed, adding further uncertainty to the final tally.

U.S. Representative – District 20 (Bexar County)

Democratic Primary

Incumbent Joaquin Castro faced challenges from Kendra Elizabeth Wilkerson and John Atwood.

Results:

Kendra Elizabeth Wilkerson– 6,165 votes–9.38%
John Atwood–1,624 votes– 2.47%
Winner: Joaquin Castro–57,920 votes– 88.15%

Republican Primary

The Democratic nominee will face Republican Edgardo Rafael Baez in November.

Winner: Katy Padilla Stout–22,270 votes–61.48%

Democratic Primary

The Associated Press has called the Democratic primary for Gina Hinojosa. With 66 percent of votes counted, Hinojosa secured the nomination shortly after 9:26 p.m.

Winner: Gina Hinojosa – 959,612 votes – 60.3%
Chris Bell – 154,853 votes – 9.7%
Angela Villescaz – 99,923 votes – 6.3%
Patricia Abrego – 85,886 votes – 5.4%
Andrew White – 84,308 votes – 5.3%

Republican Primary

The Associated Press has called the Republican primary for Gov. Greg Abbott, who secured the nomination shortly after 8 p.m.

Results:

Winner: Greg Abbott (incumbent) – 884,839 votes – 82.8%
Pete Chambers – 113,429 votes – 10.6%
Evelyn Brooks – 21,172 votes – 2.0%
Arturo Espinosa – 10,599 votes – 1.0%
Charles Crouch – 7,020 votes – 0.7%

Texas House of Representatives

District 117 (Bexar County)

Democratic Primary

Winner: Philip Cortez – 7,570 votes – 72.78%
Robert Mihara – 2,831 votes – 27.22%

Republican Primary

The Democratic nominee will face Republican Ben Mostyn in November.

District 119 (Bexar County)

Democratic Primary

Winner: Elizabeth “Liz” Campos– 13,049 votes–77.63%
Ryan Ayala–3,760 votes–22.37%

Democratic Primary

Former San Antonio mayor Ron Nirenberg declared victory Tuesday night after defeating incumbent Peter Sakai in the Democratic primary for Bexar County judge.

Peter Sakai–67,890 votes–37.8%
Winner: Ron Nirenberg–111,719 votes–62.2%

Republican Primary

The Democratic nominee will face Republican Patrick Von Dohlen in November.

Bexar County Criminal District Attorney

Luz Elena Chapa led the Democratic primary with 23.80 percent of the vote, followed by Jane Davis with 18.14 percent. Because no candidate received a majority, the two will advance to a May 26 runoff election.

What Happens Next

If no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote in their party’s primary, the top two finishers will advance to a May runoff election.

The eventual Democratic and Republican nominees will then face each other in the November 3, 2026 general election.
